CENER 21 at the Third Protected Areas Managers' Day in Bosnia and Herzegovina

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in cooperation with Republic Institute for the protection of cultural, historical and natural heritage in Republika Srpska organized the Third Protected Areas Managers Day in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the biggest and oldest National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to present a progress towards establishment of new protected areas in Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska. The event represents well–established practice and for the third time it was opened on 2nd October 2019, within the project “Achieving biodiversity conservation through creation, effective management and spatial designation of protected areas and capacity building”.

 

Presentations and workshops were held in the conference hall of reconstructed Battle Museum of Sutjeska, where more than 80 participants had an opportunity to discuss protected area management effectiveness in Bosnia and Herzegovina, common issues and challenges with an aim to establish potential solutions and future cooperation.

 

The first day, participants gathered from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, presented organization of the ranger services and protected areas management plans efficiency and during the second–day main topic was tourism in protected areas and representative of Nature & Adventure held an interactive workshop about sustainable tourism in protected areas. Within the program, CENER 21 representative gave a brief presentation, describing progress towards the establishment of new protected areas in the Federation of BiH, including Bjelašnica–river canyon–Rakitnica–Treskavica-Visočica, Botanical reserve Mediterranetum–Neum, Cave system Vjetrenica and Livanjsko polje.

 

The third Protected Areas Managers Day was concluded with an interesting visit to the renewed Battle Museum of Sutjeska and reconstructed memorial house of the battle of Sutjeska within the 13 frescoes painted by famous artist Krsto Hegedušić. During the last day of the event, participants had a great opportunity to explore the beauty of National park Sutjeska near lake Donje Bare.
